Why do I write this?
Since I started hiking in Taiwan, I noticed this problem. The application process for entering Taiwanese mountain areas is a totally different logic from that in Japan, Europe, the USA, an so on. Many foreign hikers, especially those who do not know Mandarin Chinese, face the applying problems. That's why, here I make efforts to provide some basic knowledge of entering Taiwanese mountain areas, in English.

General Ideas in Hiking Taiwan
If you are going to any hiking trails that are covered in a national park, you will need to apply for an Park Entry Permit. Also, to reserve both natural endemic species and cultural heritage, Taiwanese government has planned several areas that are protected by limiting the total number of visitors. Those places with aboriginal tribes are mostly protected. That is, before visiting, an extra Mountain Permit is simultaneously required. So, be aware of that.

General Types of Application Process
  • Online Application (3 days or 7 days ~30 days before setting off)
  • Application on arrival (at assigned police station)
  • Yushan National Park [foreignor's Priority] (3 months ~ 45 days before setoff)

How to Fill out Application Form?
  Park Entry Permit

Step I - Enter application system

Step II - Roughly read the regulations, check all of them, then click " I Agree " (Of course you can cancel if you disagree!)

*Explanation for Yushan National Park

(1) Foreign hikers have priority by submitting an advanced application to Yushan. However, it's available period is 35 days (to 4 months) before starting date. That is, you have to arrange your hiking trip and submit an application earlier than Taiwanese hikers. Relative to Shei-Pa and Taroko, it is a great advantage for foreign hikers to take an occupant hiking in Yushan.

(2) Once you miss the opportunity of submitting advanced applications, you will have to do with Standard Application and compete for an occupant from thousands of applicants though.

Step III - Fill out application forms
Take climbing Snow Mountain as an example.
